Haiti Child Labor

In Haiti, a small, insulated area of the Caribbean, there are many children who are considered as slaves. UNICEF estimates that there are 250,000 to 300,000 children in bondage. Poorer families send their children to engage in tedious tasks, such as carrying water for miles or emptying bedpans. They are even punished for the smallest mistakes, any many suffer from sexual abuse or severe beatings. Some of these children are as young as 3 to15. Their owners can disown them in an instant, throwing them out on the streets. Haiti is the poorest nation in the western hemisphere and has an uneven distribution of income. Many citizens are accustomed to these practices, which is why it would be difficult to change. People who are at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder do not receive basic human rights, which explains these deplorable conditions.
